Doin' hair and daily life

Our friend, Given, is 'plaiting' (braiding) little Elsie Burns hair. This process takes a few hours over several days but will last for about a month. Given braided in fake hair/yarn to Elsie's short hair. She then put beads in the ends and secured them by burning the ends with a candle. Any Zambian with a bit of money will have their hair done like this. It changes their look so much that sometimes it takes a while to recognise them. Given, in grade 12, is wearing a typical school uniform. Almost all schools require uniforms. The other photo shows Heather and Peter Burns caught in a downpour. Kids here make kites out of sticks and plastic shopping bags. Even the string is from a mealie meal bag (like a potato sack).
