Billboards and Brands
We have been homebound a bit because we returned our Cruiser for a few minor repairs. This is probably good timing as diesel is in shortage here. At times we have had to try three different stations before we find one that has it. Cars are stalled around the city. When you find it, you fill up! So I thought I would tell you about some of the daily things you may find interesting. There is a tile roofing company here called Harvey Tile. They have signs everywhere around Lusaka. Some are rather creative like "The only thing that should be between you and God is a Harvey Tile roof." One said, "A roof without Harvey Tile is like burning in hell without a Savior!" Pretty shocking to what we are used to. I'll add to these as we see more.
The mini busses have slogans on them too. We've seen "Born Again", "God's Grace", "Amazing Grace", "Jesus Saves", you get the idea. We've seen many men with ball caps that say "Jesus". Christian jargon is all around but many don't understand how to walk the walk. Someone said Christianity here is a mile wide and an inch deep. Painted on a wall in a busy part of town is a huge ONE then Zambia, Nation, Husband, Wife. "One Zambia, One Nation, One Husband, One Wife, stay faithful, AIDS affects us all."
On the lighter side we have laughed at some brand names of products. For oatmeal we buy "Jungle Oats", and raisins say "Safari Raisins", the granola is "Jungle Energy Crunch", our eggs come from "Zam Chick", the beef company is "Zam Beef" and the milk, yep, "Zam Milk". Some products are grown and produced in Zambia but most are shipped in from South Africa. We can get Rice Krispies, the real Kelloggs, but made in South Africa.
